New works coming soon...

Timothy Hoey

What is your artwork about (underlying concept, focus, themes, intent, etc)?

Art neither begins nor ends on the canvas. It is up to the artist to be both creative and in some ways destructive, to push the medium, the concept and indeed themselves, thereby creating a brief snapshot of the creative process. It is this risk or angst which lends honesty to the work itself.

What informs your artwork or what are your influences?

I had the great fortune to grow up and be influenced by the styles and perspectives of Robin Skelton and the Limners, as well as Eric Rhode among others. This early exposure to various artists and writers has influenced me throughout my life. My first solo show at seventeen has served as a catalyst to drive myself and my work.

What matters to you most about the work that you do?

I hope my work conveys a sense of beauty, a point of 'grounding' where the viewer can react and reflect upon the work.

Is there a trigger or a starting point for each piece?

Each piece evolves on its own. As I work I allow the medium, the environment and myself to play upon the work. I may work on a few series at one time, allowing myself to cross and mix ideas and concepts, so more often than not the end of one piece becomes the trigger or concept for the next.

How has your work evolved over the last five years?

In the past few years my work has matured and perhaps shows a greater degree of confidence. This is both from continually painting as well as the support from my wife Candis.

What is currently the central motivation for or conceptual concern in your work?

Currently I hope to convey 'simplicity' in my work -- a strong comforting image. As our lives become more intense and busy, I hope my work can be meditative to the viewer, a 'place to rest and reflect'.

How does your physical/geographical environment inform the work you do?

My studio is an old dirt floor garage, devoid of heat and with little light. I couldn't imagine painting anywhere else, my paintings and their materials react differently with extremes of temperature, and at 20 below, I find myself working quicker, smarter and hopefully more honestly with each piece. With my 'paper works', I have the luxury of mobility, my ability to paint and draw is only limited to the physical space available, these works become almost more calculated and less impulsive than my paintings.

What mediums, techniques, or processes are involved in your art making (and why these)?

With my paintings I mix and push various mediums, pigments and resins acting sometimes as more of an alchemist than artist. In my works on paper, various inks, watercolour and drawing materials are used in more orthodox methods.

What are your other passions in life and how have these influenced your work?

My greatest passion and motivation in life is my wife Candis and our two sons. They are all a constant source of inspiration and support, my greatest fans and harshest critics, they have allowed me to explore my art, put up with the oddities and revel in the influences.

Why are you an artist?

Whether it is painting, music, photography or writing I have always felt the need to communicate and express my ideas. I never felt that I became an artist by 'happenstance'; I have always lived the life as an artist naturally. It is who I am, not something chosen or pursued.
