Artist Statement

"Temporary Showroom" began in early 2011 with printed images on aluminum (Jackie Bagley) which were taken in East Berlin. Each image depicts the two worlds that East Berlin is currently caught between.

I wanted to explore this emotional struggle, the dichotomy of finding more safety in what we knew than was we can discover. And that struggle takes place in society, in community, in family and within each of us.

I thought for some time on this- from the idea of a families being separated, hearts being torn, past concrete understandings suddenly smashed- and the consistent thread in all of it was this idea that home- a place of security, a place to flourish, ultimate comfort- is separate from ourselves. The feeling of being caught between two worlds is where the struggle begins. I wanted to challenge this idea. I wanted to explore the creation of your constant- your home base- being from within. And from there, bravery, vulnerability and joy can be found. No matter the turmoil. No matter the circumstance.

By selecting specific elements from each of the images, I recreated them in a series of layered paintings, which would take from the old and build anew. And repeat again. East Berlin is changing rapidly, but each story is there. Every tradition and hope and memory is there. It's just covered up. And the new layers are making their own history that will then become the foundation for the next. By taking this way of building into our own worlds, I believe security and love will charge on in. The paintings remind us that every layer has purpose and supports or compliments what lies beneath. .

I truly believe that when faced with horrific or challenging circumstance we have to dig in deeper, hold on tighter and add weight to our anchors in order to be able to move with the wind to find our newest shift. And in that sense, we can build our home. A home that is constant, and that houses enough courage and commitment to face anything.

If everything is temporary, but we are solid in our footing, we can recognize that every temporary thing has been a permanent piece in our presence. And that, well,,that is really powerful.
